Fuengirola has some of the best beaches of the Costa del Sol: Los Boliches, Fuengirola, La Campana, Torreblanca, Las Gaviotas... It sits on a thin strip of coastline of some 8 kilometres long and it's beaches are surrounded by a large and busy promenade where hotels, apartments, residential complexes, restaurants, terraces and other services enable you to enjoy the sun and the sea in relaxed comfort.
Sports and leisure in Fuengirola
Those who enjoy sports have a large range of possibilities in Fuengirola. Those which stand out are golf, there being in the district and the suburbs approximately twenty 18 hole courses which are available all year round.
The racetrack and the other schools of equestrianism in neighbouring Mijas offer excellent facilities to learn or perfect the art of equestrianism. It is also possible to play tennis in one of the area’s numerous clubs.
Water sports have a special relevance in Fuengirola. The coastline offers marine depths which are very attractive for scuba diving, which is possible in any one of the many diving schools in the area. The leisure harbour, located next to the fishing port, has modern facilities and navigation is possible here, in addition to other water sports such as sailing or scuba diving.
However, Fuengirola offers many other free time possibilities for everyone. For one, there is the zoo, or you can enjoy an unforgettable day in the aquatic park or walk around the Sohail River Park, a large and modern leisure area traversed by a navigable canal 800 metres long. If you prefer, you can visit any of the cultural sites found in the Casa de la Cultura or in the modern Palacio de La Paz.
Fuengirola also has typical neighbourhoods such as Santa Fe de los Boliches, with deep maritime roots, or Pueblo López, which has streets filled with pretty examples of popular Andalucian architecture.
Some background
Fuengirola retains in its well traced corners many charms. Dominating the centre of the village is the Plaza de la Constitución (19th century), where the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario can be found. On a nearby hill close to the mouth of the River Fuengirola you find the Castle of Sohail, which construction was ordered in the 10th century and even now some of the walls remain. Next to this square the remains of a Phoenopunian settlement who were the seed of the village (between the 6th and 3rd centuries BC) were discovered. The importance of the town is the past is proved by the Roman town of Suel, which is located on the slopes of the castle’s hill. Other Roman remains can be found at the sites of la Finca del Secretario and Torreblanca, where Roman baths and a Visigoth necropolis can be found.
