Benalmadena in the Province of Málaga, is situated between Torremolinos and Marbella and it is one of the most important centres of the Costa del Sol, reaching a population of 60,000 at the height of summer. The large range of gastronomy offered by its bars, terraces and restaurants and its appearance of Andalucian village in the mountains with whitewashed houses replete with flowers make this a very attractive destination for visitors.
Benalmadena is located on the slopes of the Sierra de Mijas at 280 metres above sea level, and only 10 kilometres from Malaga Airport. There are very good communications with the capital, which is 20 kilometres away, and which can be reached by the main road in the direction of Algeciras, by train from nearby locations, and also by bus.
Benalmadena is divided into various urban centres. For one there is the village of Benalmádena Town at 280 metres above sea level with its long streets and geraniums in the windows. Between the village and the beach is Arroyo de la Miel, an urban centre which grew next to the train station and the old road connecting Benalmadena and the coast. Walking distance from the beach is Benalmadena Coast with a large range of shops and accomodation.
The freetime activities offered in Benalmadena are very varied and available all year round. The ones which stand out are Puerto Marina, the cable car, Torrequebrada Casino and the golf course of the same name. The former is located in Benalmadena Costa, and has a capacity of nearly 1000 berths for boats of up to 6 metres in length. In addition all manner of water sports can be enjoyed here from kayaking to water skiing to diving.
There is a recently constructed cable car in Arroyo la Miel, ascending to the summit of Carambolo. On a clear day it is possible to see all of the coast of Malaga, the Costa del SOL, and even Africa. There is also the Tívoli funfair in this part of the town, and the Sea-Life acquarium can also be found here.
One of the curiosities of this town is visiting the "Estupa de la Iluminación", the largest in the Western world, with murals which show the most important milestones in the life of Buddha.
Leaving the village and heading down the road to Torremuelle you will see the Torrequebrada Casino, an important leisure facility and conference centre. In the development of the same name there is also Torrequebrada Golf course for the fans of this sport.
In Benalmadena Village you can also visit diverse gardens such as Águila and Muro, the Castle of Colomares and the Archaeological Museum.
Benalmadena is characterised by having an endless calendar of activities. Cultural contests, sporting competitions and night festivals fill the life of this town. Certain festivals stand out on the calendar such as Carnaval (February), Easter (March-April), Festival of Benalmadena Village (August), Festival of Arroyo de la Miel (June) and Día del Carmen (July).
The arrival of foreign tourists in the Costa del Sol has expanded the range of hotels in Benalmadena, which in practice means that you can sample any type of cuisine which takes your fancy, of any nationality. If however you want to taste local cuisine you simply have to go to any of the beachside bars and sample the fish cooked in various forms.
