The municipality of Mijas, located along Andalucia's south-western coast and just 30 kms away from Malaga International Airport, extends from the mountain range of the same name, through hilly and rugged countryside to the sea. Mijas is one of the largest districts in the province of Malaga, spanning an area of 149 Km2. It is divided into three main urban centres: The town of Mijas located within the Mijas mountain range has all the charm of a typical whitewashed Andalusian village, Las Lagunas on the Mijas coast is the most modern part of the municipal district and is the region's industrial and comercial hub, and the coastal village of La Cala which can be found in the centre of the municipality's 12 km of coastline.
The Mijas Coast and Beaches
The Mijas coastline stretches for nearly 12 km along which you can find a number of attractive and well-maintained beaches including el Faro, el Charcón, la Butiplaya and Calahonda... The golden beaches of La Cala (Las Doradas) and La Butibamba carry the blue flag of the C.E.E and offer a wide variety of services and activities. Throughout the summer lifeguards patrol the Mijas coastline. You can explore the little coves or enjoy the vast sandy beaches...The choice is yours.
La Cala de Mijas lies at the heart of the Mijas coast. This small town still has the charm and appeal of a typical fishing village despite the urbanization it has experienced over the last number of decades. Here you can find the Torrevieja watchtower (Torreón de la Cala), built around the year 1540. Currently La Cala's Tourism Office and the Centro de Interpretación de las Torres VigÃas are located inside the tower. The Mijas coast also has a lot to offer in terms of leisure activities and sports in the form of golf courses, tennis courts, a racetrack and a water park, etc.
The Town of Mijas
The architecture in Mijas is typical of the Arabic period. The town itself is situated along the Mijas mountainside and, with its whitewashed houses contrasting starkly with the green of the pine trees, it is one of the most beautiful sights along the coast.
As well as the usual tourist curiosities like the burro-taxis (donkey rides), the town of Mijas has a number of interesting monuments for visitors to explore such as the tiny and strangely shaped bull ring (Plaza de Toros), two churches built in the Mudejar style and the ancient ruins of the Arabic wall which encircle a number of beautiful gardens. Visitors can also visit the shrine of the town's patron saint, the Virgen de la Peña.
La iglesia de la Inmaculada Concepción (The Church of the Immaculate Conception) was first built by Muslims in the year 836 and later converted into a Christian temple following the the conquest in 1510, at which time a Mozarabic style tower was also added. You can also see the white chapel of The Port (el Puerto) from almost any point within the town because of its high location.
The Mijas Mountain Range
The view from the mountain range is very rough and rugged but it is softened somewhat by the presence of a pine forest which adds an element of beauty to the landscape and serves to highlight the commanding presence of the Mijas which, from their high location, look like a white Watchtower keeping vigil over the sea. If you travel along the old road that links the towns of Mijas and Benalmádena you can see all the way to the sea through the pine trees and chalets dotted along the way.
The Mijas mountain range belongs to the Penibético group of mountains and, with an elevation point of 1,150 metres (at the Pico Mijas summit), visitors can enjoy stunning panoramic views and a peaceful walk through the lush natural landscape. There are various hiking trails allowing vistors to make the most of being in such a previledged location.
A typical characteristic of the Mijas mountain range are its steep ravines which are often dried out and filled with interesting caves hollowed into the limestone rock. The rugged and mountainous nature of the Mijas makes it the perfect place to do outdoor activities and for spending time with Nature.
